Manners Matter

Today, academic achievement is not enough. Competition on every level is very high. How will your child stand out when everyone has high grades and participates in multiple extra curricular activities?

We spend time and money on our children’s education, sign them up for sports and music lessons, and send them to summer camps all in the hope of making them well-rounded, successful members of society. Yet, for all our investment, how much attention do we pay to their social skills?

Social media changed how young people engage with one another and the pandemic has further altered social interaction, creating unforeseen trials during childhood and adolescence—times that are already challenging enough to navigate. Now, more than ever, social skills are critical, not just for knowing how to behave in the classroom or at prom, but as a remedy for the growing sense of isolation and depression among our youth.

Manners matter because they are more than knowing which fork to use. They are more than a reminder to keep our elbows off the table. And, they are much more than a bunch of rules that fancy people follow. The foundation of JMC’s manners enrichment courses is respect, both for oneself and for others.

Developing behavior based on respect helps build compassion and empathy which are key for healthy and successful connections, whether it’s in the classroom, the boardroom, or at home.

Soon, we will return to face-to-face interactions but that doesn’t mean things will be the way they were. Having solid social skills will be one of the best ways to prepare young people not only to get back on track, but to move on with poise and confidence.
